Birding Excursion at Lagoa de Obidos / May 2026

It is 8 am when I meet Sofia and her friend for a wonderful private tour at Lagoa de Obidos. Lagoa de Obidos is one the best, if not the best birding hotspot of the Leiria region, where more than 200 bird species have already been spotted. We are in May and most migrating bird species have arrived. We are very lucky with the weather as we enjoy the sun between two showers and strong winds.

Sofia and her friend already knew birds pretty well, but it was a pleasure to help them learn more about behavior, habits, and songs. We got to see 40 bird species on this 3 hour tour, with fantastic highlights such as seeing 2 Purple Herons, several Western Yellow Wagtails, 2 Little Terns and a small group of Eurasian Spoonbills.
